01 — Origin story

Where the
spark came from.

Imani always loved fashion — but not just for the sake of looking good. She noticed that kids in her school were sometimes embarrassed they didn't have the right supplies or gear. She wanted to do something about it.

When she discovered she was an Artistic Creator through the Dream Chaser TalentExplorer, it clicked. Her eye for design wasn't just a hobby — it was a tool for something bigger. iStyle was born the same week she got her talent result.

I always knew I liked art and fashion but I didn't know it could actually help people. When I saw my talent result I thought — okay, this is real. I can use this.

03 — The journey

How she
built it.

Imani worked through the Starter Merch Shop playbook over six weeks at the YMCA Charlotte afterschool program. She started with original sketches, digitized her designs in Canva, set up a print-on-demand store, and ran her first pop-up at a school event.

Every step was documented. Every artifact below is real — the same work she submitted to her facilitator and the same work she'll reference for years.

04 — Capstone reflection

What she learned.

About building a business

I learned that pricing is harder than it looks. You have to think about what it costs to make something AND what people will actually pay — those numbers are not the same. I also learned that marketing is really just telling your story, and I'm good at that.

About myself

I always knew I liked art and fashion but I didn't know it could be serious. Like, I didn't know it could actually be a career or help people. Now I see my creativity differently. It's not just something I do for fun — it's something I can build with.

About my calling

I think I'm supposed to use beauty to do good. That sounds big but I mean it. When I gave school supplies to kids who needed them, bought with money from my designs — that felt like the whole point. I want to keep doing that, bigger, for a long time.
